How #readers choose #books from new and established #authors - is it a conscious or subconscious decision?

How do you choose your next book?

Today’s question is:

How do readers choose books from new and established authors?

Since starting my latest challenge 38 days ago, which was aimed at providing the motivation and focus needed to complete my current work in progress on a very precise schedule, I have started reading more books.

This may appear counterproductive as my time should be spent writing, however, I justify this to myself in two ways. Firstly I believe that reading, especially across multiple genres, makes you a better writer. Secondly, for me, downtime away from my writing is important to prevent author overwhelm.

Is it a conscious or subconscious decision?

The desire to read more comes with the need for more books and it was in the pursuit of my latest batch of books that I started to ponder how I choose the books I want to read and is it always a conscious choice or am I influenced by subconscious stimuli.

I started to look at the books I have read over the last 38 days and realised they have been a mixture of romance novels and new for me sports personality autobiographies. Those of you that know me will also know that I have no knowledge or interest in sport, which begs the question, what is it about these books that drew me in? After further consideration of these subconscious book choices, I discovered that my book choices reflected my desire to achieve my goals, to be the best that I can be as a parent, grandparent, family member, friend, writer, and book promoter. There are many sports personalities that have inspirational and motivational stories to share about how they overcame obstacles to achieve success in their given sport or how they coped with challenges caused by their success, physical or psychological factors.

Let me know in the comments how you choose your books?

Is it preferred genres, favourite authors, characterisation, location, etc? Have you ever changed your reading habits and if so why?

As #the100daysproject continues, I am determined to carry on reading and writing. Who knows what I will be reading by day 100!

How to get started as an indie author, as told by award winning author Sarah Jane Butfield

Have you ever thought about becoming an indie author, self-publishing, and how to get started?

If so, then these self-help authors' guides which are based on award-winning independent author Sarah Jane Butfield's personal experiences will help to get you started.

The What, Why, Where, When, Who & How

Book Promotion Series

What reviewers have to say:

Book 1 The Accidental Author: Free to read!

"It's like we are having a valuable conversation with a friend who knows what she's talking about, rather than being instructed from on high."
"I think Ms. Butfield can add mentor, inspirational speaker, cheerleader and eternal optimist to her lists of credentials. As I devoured the words of this book, I felt a kinship to the author on a personal and professional level. With a kind and open heart she shares the gold nuggets of her wisdom and experience."

Book 2 The Amateur Authorpreneur:

"In this guide to the What, Why, When, Where, Who and How of self-publishing, Sarah Jane Butfield really gets down to the nitty-gritty. She begins with a general, and very useful outline of the needs of a new writer trying to promote their book, and then she goes on to the first few items on her list and examines each of them in detail, especially Twitter, Facebook, and blogs. I have been a published writer for several years now and have read a good many books and blog posts about promoting books, but none of them have covered so much ground so clearly as this one."
"Sarah Jane is a very talented writer and I now have all the books that she has written so far. This book gives you a boost and makes you think outside the box. An amazing book and well worth a read."

Book 3 The Intermediate Authorpreneur:

ARC Readers said:
"This guide is just what I needed to set my goals for the future"
"I am awe of what an indie author has to know and do on a daily basis, as a reader I applaud you all."
"A valuable guide and essential reading for all new authors or those that need to refocus their social media presence."
"The evidence-based graphs and statistics were a nice, reassuring touch. Sarah definitely keeps it real."

the world of books? NO!

We are all familiar with the images of children dressing up as their favourite book characters on #worldbookday but why should we miss out on the fun, ok maybe the dressing up is a bit much but let's take the opportunity to indulge ourselves during lunch break, after work or when the kids are in bed!

What's your favourite genre to read?

Do you prefer to read an ebook or a paperback?

Books are food for the soul, they take you to places most can only dream of and they can help you escape day-to-day life even for a short time. Memoirs, for me, are like a shot of reality television, they give me a glimpse into the lives of others whether that's living life in another country, coping with a challenging life event, or sharing experiences. Having said that when I read fiction I love to indulge in a book that makes me think and try to work out the ending.

Why not try this awesome book by Randy Williams
