Merry Christmas

Quote of the Day:

What is Christmas? It is tenderness for the past, courage for the present, hope for the future. It is a fervent wish that every cup may overflow with blessings rich and eternal, and that every path may lead to peace. ~Agnes M. Pahro

Midge and Moo are best friends. They came home from the hospital together when Midge was just two days old. They do everything together, and that includes writing a series of letters to Santa.
December 1st Dear Santa, I’d like long hair for Christmas. And my best friend Moo would like a castle. Love, Midge
December 8th Dear Santa, Mommy says a castle is too big for you to carry here in your sleigh. Please bring a dragon instead.

Midge and Moo’s letters to Santa reflect the vast imagination (and practical insight) that kids bring to the holiday, and the sense of magic and wonder that makes Christmas so much fun!
Snuggle up with your little one and spend the day with Midge and Moo.

Richard Klein was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1962 – the same year that the Rolling Stones and the Beatles recorded their first singles and the same year that Brazil would win its second FIFA world cup. Richard’s British-Jewish parents, had moved to a booming Rio de Janeiro in the wake of World War II, and would soon prosper. They would never, however, fully adapt to their new land, – and certainly not to either football or rock n’ roll. Richard, nonetheless, would grow up to love both. In fact, this is the heart of the story: the author’s journey of discovery of the land of his birth, as well as adventuring into the brave new world of rock culture in the 1960s, 70s and 80s, all under the sinister shadow of the military dictatorship that ruled Brazil at this time.

Lost Samba is part memoir, part document of the birth of the new Brazil – a fascinating first-person account of a dark, but exciting, period for the country. Richard shows, first hand, the enjoyment and excesses of his generation’s urban élite of the lifestyle secured for them by the military rule. Ha also shows the country crawling from under the claws of that regime and, ultimately, the unfolding of one of the worst economic disasters in Brazilian history.

This book peers through the many clichés about Brazil, and surprises the reader with anecdotes, adventures, reflections and facts, while managing to be a useful resource for those wishing to understand this huge country.
Although the Lost Samba takes the form of a memoir it offers powerful historical and political insights into the recent history of the ‘sleeping giant’. The author was born into a rare position of being the son of British-Jewish immigrants to Brazil who was fully educated there. With this outsider-insider background, and with an adventurous and politicized spirit, Richard experienced the intense moments that gave birth to the country's democracy. As an author who is able to understand the Brazilian mentality and history as clearly as the ‘first world’ mindset, his writing is ideal for those seeking to understand how Brazil functions.
This is the fully revised, second edition, of Lost Samba. The book has also been re-designed and now has illustrations while the e-book now contains a plethora of links to help give the reader a comprehensive experience.

Centuries have passed, and the plague-emptied civilization of the mid twenty-third century bears a striking resemblance to that of the mid 1800’s. Communities and industry are once again vying for power and resources.

A young man, Edge, newly displaced from his future, must regain his position in order to succeed. His opportunity? A long shot chance, offered by a man he trusts, to join a trading party into the interior of the once great nation.

The dangers of the trek and a young woman, Jody, newly orphaned, tempt both failure and unusual reward. Together Edge and Jody bring to light the truth of the past, their ancestor’s defeat at the hands of power, and provide a path to bring back an entity meant to remain forever hidden.

This third and final volume of "In the Shadow of the Dragon" takes us into the difficulties of the characters. They are definitely wandering on the boulevard of broken dreams. Erwan multiplies several sentimental adventures and exchanges around Scotch whiskey with his friend Rochester, a Quebec native and descendant of the Scottish clan Mac Neil. As cynic as a businessman can be, Rochester doesn’t hesitate to buy textile produced by the prisoners in the Gansu Laogai. He even dares to paraphrase Vespasian: Money has no honor! Mona will know the failure of her police projects and the beginning of her love for Erwan. The winner is the system that will eventually triumph over all these individual plans. Only to come out eventually Cao Yu who prefers a simple and secluded life in a distant province and the end of the problems that have led her to the Gulag, but that is not what she had dreamed about. Cosmos will meet his fate by the hand of a Tiananmen Square hero. All this leaves a bitter taste and makes it more relevant than ever the sentence attributed to Arnaud Amaury during the sack of Béziers July 22, 1209, "Kill them all, God knows who the believers are."

Here is the story of David as you have never heard it before: from the king himself, telling the unofficial version, the one he never allowed his court scribes to recount. In his mind, history is written to praise the victorious—but at the last stretch of his illustrious life, he feels an irresistible urge to tell the truth. In the first volume, Rise to Power, David gives you a fascinating account of his early years, culminating with a tribal coronation. Rooted in ancient lore, his is a surprisingly modern memoir.

Quote of the day:

Take care of the small things and the big things will take care of themselves.

‘Many years after the deaths of my parents, my aunt handed me a box filled with letters that my father had written to my mother over the period from 1940 to 1945. This was the starting point of a journey for me to rediscover the father I had never really known...’

This is the story of John Searancke’s parents, told mostly from the side of his father, Eddie Searancke, from the time of his calling up in early 1940 to his release from a prisoner of war camp in Germany in 1945, thence his return to England to try to pick up the pieces of his old life. Nothing could ever be quite the same afterwards.

The letters take readers through five captivating years, telling of the ups and downs, the plots and counterplots, as Eddie rose through the ranks to end his war as a captain, elevated to that rank in the field as his troops faced the formidable might of the SS Panzers. The letters also reveal where his battle came to an abrupt end, in an orchard surrounded by the enemy and captured after a series of bloody skirmishes as the British army spearheaded its way from the beaches of Normandy. The journey as a prisoner across France and Germany in a truck, with comrades dying each day, may be as hard to read as it is to tell, particularly when a new life and new harsh rules had to be learned and rigidly enforced in a prison camp in northern Germany, the final destination.

This is written as part memoir, part fictionalised retelling and partly in letter format; John draws together all sources to recreate the five years of war and hardship that the letters span.

What do we do when we are shattered by an unexpected loss and feel like no one understands what we are going through?
How do we comfort those we love when their hearts are breaking if we don’t know how to help?
How can we mourn with the bereaved, when we are so frightened by their pain that we want to run in the opposite direction?
