When one of my early mentors suggested that my qualification as a Registered General Nurse would be my ticket to ‘Having It All’ I could not visualise what that meant for me as a woman or how it would manifest itself in relation to my nursing career. However, this phrase became embedded in my subconscious and would influence my goals, dreams, and aspirations both personally and professionally. The art of having it all is rooted in the belief that you already do have it all and my vision of having it all was not based on greed or a materialistic wish list, instead, it described the tight rope walk and the finely balanced juggling act that was my life, my career, and my family. The truth was that I had survived a period in my life that physically and emotionally had pushed me to the edge, and I was literally saved only by the deep-seated love for my children. As I held onto my dream of a brighter, better future for me and the children a ray of light appeared at the end of the tunnel, with an inner voice telling me to start over, could this be my chance to have it all and be happy ever after or were there more significant challenges ahead?
